There have been 1,700 aftershocks of the magnitude 5.4 earthquake centered north of Ridgecrest near the Kern-Inyo county line Aug. 17, seismologists at Caltech and the U.S. Geological Survey reported Thursday.

The scientists said the largest of the aftershocks occurred Wednesday and measured magnitudes 4.1, 3.9 and 3.8. However, they said the frequency of aftershocks has diminished as expected, with more than 1,300 occurring in the first week after the quake and not quite 400 in the second week.

The main shock was the strongest earthquake in California this year. However, only minor damage and one injury was reported in the desert region.
