Northridge Gets First Volleyball Victory
Crystal Newquist had 10 kills and Carrie Kapfenberg added eight kills and 12 digs to help Cal State Northridge to a 15-4, 15-6, 15-4 women’s volleyball victory over Eastern Michigan Friday in the University of San Francisco tournament.
The victory was the first of the season for the Matadors (1-3), who lost to San Jose State, 15-6, 15-2, 8-15, 15-0, in a round-robin match earlier in the day.
Northridge will conclude the tournament with matches against San Francisco and Idaho today.
After registering an anemic hitting percentage of .034 against San Jose State, the Matadors improved to .279 against Eastern Michigan as setter Heather Hofmans played her first complete match of the season.
Hofmans, a highly regarded junior transfer from Long Beach State, missed Northridge’s first two matches with a biceps injury and played in only two of the four games against San Jose State. She had 26 assists and nine digs against Eastern Michigan after registering 10 assists and five digs against San Jose State.
Newquist had a .368 hitting percentage against Eastern Michigan with fellow freshman Kapfenberg at .412.
Junior Lisa Bussard had six kills and sophomore Rene Goth added five for the Matadors.
Freshman Holli Hansen, who had four kills and nine digs against Eastern Michigan, had eight kills and five digs against San Jose State.
