SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A woman who was beaten and raped early Sunday was still unconscious and in serious condition at a local hospital Tuesday, unable to identify herself or her attacker.

The woman, who was found half naked in a church parking lot with cuts and bruises over her entire body, has been unable to tell police anything about the man who assaulted her sometime after midnight Sunday.

The woman was described as in her 20s, according to police spokesman Chahe Keuroghelian.

“As long as she remains unconscious, it looks like we will not know anything concrete,” said Keuroghelian. “She could have been raped there, dragged there, dumped there or thrown out of a car. We don’t know exactly what happened, and at this point, we’re just asking for help from the residents in the area or the public at large.”

Officers found the woman in the 500 block of Columbus Avenue in south Glendale after responding to reports of a woman screaming for help. Police say several witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing the scene, and one witness described the suspect as a man who appeared to be in his 30s.

A spokeswoman at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where the woman was being treated, said the victim was “unable to speak for herself” and would release no information on her condition.

The incident was one of two rapes reported in Glendale during the Labor Day weekend.

Police said an unidentified man was scheduled to be arraigned in a Glendale courtroom today on rape and robbery charges stemming from the second incident, in which a 67-year-old woman was tied up, beaten and raped and her apartment ransacked. Police would not release the identity of the suspect before the arraignment because they said it could jeopardize their search for a second suspect in the crime. Police said the woman may have known one or both of her assailants.
