ORANGE : Hearing Delayed for Teen Slaying Suspect

An Orange County Juvenile Court judge on Tuesday postponed the extradition proceedings for a 14-year-old Tustin boy charged with a Nevada murder-robbery, authorities said.

Peter Quinn Elvik will return to court next Tuesday to begin proceedings that may return him to Carson City, Nev., where authorities have charged him in the shotgun slaying of a 63-year-old retiree, police said.

A spokeswoman with the district attorney’s office in Carson City said officials there filed charges Tuesday against Elvik for murder with the use of a deadly weapon and robbery with the use of a deadly weapon.

Elvik is a sometime resident of Tustin who had been living with his grandparents in Nevada before running away last Wednesday night. He is suspected of killing William Leon Gibson, 63, at a desolate rifle range along the Nevada River on Thursday, and stealing Gibson’s car and handguns.

Elvik was arrested Friday night after eluding a countywide manhunt for 17 hours. At one point, police cornered Elvik in a Costa Mesa motel room, but a motel employee alerted the young fugitive via phone, giving the boy time to flee. Elvik was captured later walking down a street near his mother’s home in Tustin.

The Orange County court proceedings Tuesday were closed because Elvik is a minor. If the boy returns to Nevada, he would automatically be tried under that state’s homicide laws as an adult.

Carson City Chief Deputy Jerry Mather said that if Elvik waives extradition at the Sept. 12 hearing, officials will come to Orange County to ferry the boy back to Carson City for arraignment.
