Valleywide : Commuter Buses Aid Santa Clarita Workers

Share

Commuter bus service began this week for San Fernando Valley residents who work in Santa Clarita.

The new transit routes are sponsored by the city of Santa Clarita and were created by modifying bus routes that connect the two valleys.

“What we’re doing is taking our existing commuter buses and, instead of having them come back empty, they’ll stop at some park-and-ride lots,” said Ron Kilcoyne, city transportation manager.

Three routes now connect different San Fernando Valley locations with key Santa Clarita sites, such as the Valencia Industrial Center and Valencia Commerce Center.

“We believe there is a market there,” Kilcoyne said. “Since they would be coming back empty anyway, even if we only have a few people, it’s fine as long as [ridership in] the peak direction remains successful.”

Route 791 offers five round-trips from the West Valley and includes a stop at the Chatsworth Metrolink station. Route 793 features three round-trips from Van Nuys. Route 794 provides four round-trips and includes stops at Union Station and the Burbank Metrolink station.

Adult fare is $2.50 for a one-way trip and $70 for a monthly pass. Tickets are half-price for youth, senior citizens and disabled riders.
