PRO FOOTBALL/ DAILY REPORT : AFC : Steelers Will Have Two New Corners

Associated Press

Rod Woodson is out for the season, so the Houston Oilers knew they would see a new cornerback in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ patched-up secondary Sunday.

Wrong. They’ll see two new corners.

With the Steelers opposing a strong, athletic receiver for the second week in a row, Coach Bill Cowher will bench 5-foot-9 Willie Williams and start former Redskin defensive back Alvoid Mays. Mays made his last NFL start on Dec. 11, 1993, against the Jets.

The change obviously wasn’t made for size. Mays also is 5-9, and will give up nearly half a foot to the Oilers’ Haywood Jeffires, just as Williams did Sunday to the Lions’ Herman Moore, who worked him over for 10 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown.

But Mays has more NFL experience than Williams, a third-year player who had played mostly in the dime defense until this season.

Deon Figures will start at left cornerback for the Steelers .
