Kyle Schommer’s touchdown pass to tight end Andrew Gudaz with 3 minutes 21 seconds to play gave Ventura High a 13-12 nonleague victory over Simi Valley on Friday night.

Schommer found a wide-open Gudaz from five yards on fourth down, capping a 10-play, 56-yard drive. Schommer, a senior first-year starter, had 14 completions in 22 attempts for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

After a scoreless first half, the Cougars received the second-half kickoff, but on the first play, Oscar Silva recovered a fumble at Ventura’s 19-yard line.

A roughing the kicker penalty moved the ball to the Cougar nine, and two plays later, Jason May scored on a six-yard run to give Simi Valley a 6-0 lead.

Ventura took the lead when Schommer found 6-foot-6 wide receiver Charles Dixon (four catches, 84 yards) on a 22-yard pass play, and Matt White’s kick put Ventura ahead, 7-6, with 9:59 to play.

Simi Valley regained the lead when May, who had 17 carries for 110 yards, scored on a 23-yard run with 7:19 remaining.

Linebacker Marcos Tovar had two interceptions for the Cougars, and Jeramie Jackson picked off Robert Gonzalez’s pass with a little more than one minute remaining to kill the Pioneers’ final possession.

Ventura running back Vinny Loffelmann had 15 carries for 47 yards.

Gonzalez completed seven of 13 passes for 36 yards, with two interceptions.
