THE TREATMENT: Not every Republican in Washington...

THE TREATMENT: Not every Republican in Washington is bashing Hollywood. . . . Maine’s Sen. Bill Cohen, a veteran author, and son Kevin, 32, are getting $15,000 from Burbank-based Warner Bros. for a screen treatment about terrorism. . . . Cohen, who was able to join the Writers Guild of America, now thinks he may be the Senate’s only card-carrying union member. “I don’t know of anybody else,” he told the Washington Post. Kevin Cohen earlier worked at MGM and United Artists.

RACE-FREE: And the people unclear on the concept award goes to . . . the Los Angeles City Council, which on Tuesday declared Los Angeles a “racism-free city.” The council reaffirmed a 2-year-old resolution declaring the second largest U.S. city free of racial hatred. How can this be, you ask? (B9)

GOOD GRIP: Don’t be afraid of these jaws. . . . Many city firefighters such as Michael Valas, above, put their faith in the Hurst Tool, known to most of us as the Jaws of Life. These arms can lift up to 18,600 pounds, wrenching apart metal like tissue to free people trapped in vehicles. . . . Details in the Street Beat column (B3).

LEFTOVERS: Who says nice dogs finish last? Despite losing a brilliant campaign for honorary mayor of Sunland-Tujunga, Farley the dog will be installed as the area’s first honorary mascot. His reward: Farley gets the leftovers at the installation dinner (B4).

HIGH ASPIRATIONS: Things are looking up in La Crescenta. . . . The 2nd annual Angel Festival will be open to the public for the first time, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at 5027 New York Ave. The event, which ends Sunday, features everything from harp musicians to lectures about angels. Word has gotten out in some strange ways, says event organizer Candace Frazee: “One person told me that the angels told her to come. I went along with her, trying to be polite.”
