Is nothing sacred?

Firefighters from the county and the U.S. Forest Service were dispatched to the Gorman area Wednesday to douse a brush fire near Smokey Bear Road.

LEND THEM A HAND: So the new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland says it has one of Michael Jackson’s gloves. We don’t want to seem cynical, but has that exhibit been authenticated by a glove expert?

HEY--THAT’S L.A.’S CLAIM TO FAME!Columnist Herb Caen reports that a joker altered the street signs at Grant and Vine in Berkeley to read Grant and “Divine.” The very idea. Everyone knows Hollywood was the site of the year’s most famous one-night stand (or, several-minutes stand) between that actor feller and his professional date.

JUROR RELIEF: When it was reported that one Simpson juror had asked to be relieved of duty because she stood to lose $3,000 on a real estate investment, KMPC talk jocks Tracey Miller and Peter Tilden appealed to listeners to help out. The duo received pledges of $600 Wednesday. They hope to deliver the money to the courthouse today.

“These are die-hard O.J. trial fans,” explained Miller. “They can’t bear the thought of a mistrial.”

Trial benefits seem to be a growing phenomenon. Last year, you may recall, John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of KFI-AM held an “Anti-Menendez Fund-Raiser” to aid L.A. County’s prosecution of the Beverly Hills brothers. That event was held at a firing range in Artesia.

DOG DAYS: Movie pooches make $2,000 a week and more these days. But Fritzie, a dachshund pup owned by D. Barker Bates’ family, settled for $10 in 1921.

“Our parents saw an ad for a young dachshund needed to take the place of one who had grown too much during the shooting of a film,” writes Bates, now a resident of Longview, Wash. “It was a story in which Mary Pickford plays a Belgian girl escaping with her dog from the war zone. Each morning, a chauffeur would pick up our pup and take it to the studio, bringing it back each evening.”

Then, as now, sharpies drew up the Hollywood contracts (see excerpt). A note at the bottom of Fritzie’s rental agreement said: “No cut on second week. If purchased, rental will be applied to purchase price.”

Fritzie should have held out for a percentage of the gross.

LONG BEACH LAW: When we heard that the Long Beach Bar Assn. was offering free legal consultations on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, we immediately checked the calendar to see if every month had a first and third Tuesday. But we found no loophole there.

The consultations, given on a first-come, first-served basis in Department 4 of the Long Beach Courthouse, will be permitted to run anywhere “between 10 and 15 minutes,” a bar rep told us.

Long Beach lawyers must be faster than most. Until now, we thought the only legal proceeding that could be carried out in 15 minutes was a five-minute break in the Simpson trial.

miscelLAny miscelLAny: “The Tonight Show’s” Jay Leno observed that newly named Milken High on Mulholland Drive is a four-year school. But with good behavior, you graduate in two.
