Westside : $7.5-Million Face-Lift Planned for PCH
Pacific Coast Highway between Santa onica and Malibu will be getting a $7.5-million face-lift--and for commuters who endure regular bottlenecks along the state highway, improvements can’t come soon enough.
The California Department of Transportation will replace 30-year-old traffic signals, install closed-circuit television cameras that can zoom in on traffic problems, erect changeable message signs and set up a low-wattage driver-information radio station.
The equipment, which will be in place from Santa Monica’s McClure Tunnel to Trancas Canyon Road in Malibu, will enable Caltrans to pinpoint traffic problems and inform drivers of tie-ups.
The upgrades will begin at the end of this year and take three years to complete.
High-tech traffic monitoring systems are used on most freeways in Los Angeles County; PCH will be the first state highway to be outfitted.
Up to 73,000 vehicles travel PCH between Santa Monica and Malibu every day
