WAITING TO HELP: Valley residents who want to help victims of Thursday’s earthquake in Mexico (A1) will have to wait. According to the American Red Cross’ Los Angeles chapter, the relief agency hasn’t heard from the Mexican government if its aid will be needed. . . . “We’re just in a wait-and-see mode,” said spokesman Manuel Rivas.

CAN’T DRIVE 55: It’s no surprise Rep. Carlos J. Moorhead (R-Glendale) intends to join Republican colleagues in voting to end federal speed limits and allow states to set their own roadway restrictions (B5). . . . After all, he knows firsthand how troublesome current limits can be, as the only Valley-area congressman nabbed in recent years for putting the pedal to the metal.

FRIENDS AND FOES: After a crushing 51-6 loss to Chaminade last week, Agoura High quarterback Ryan McCann, above, needed some cheering up (C8). The 15-year-old left-handed passer found it in a most unlikely place: three opposing league quarterbacks. The trio boosted his spirits with advice and tales of their first touchdown passes. . . . “I’m ready for that,” McCann laughed.

PIGGED OUT: This little piggy went wee wee wee all the way to the SPCA shelter. . . . That’s not the way the children’s toe-game goes, but it’s the way things went in Lake View Terrace on Thursday, where animal welfare workers took 38 Vietnamese potbellied pigs from a home they said was filled with pig manure (B1). The owner said she would fight to hang onto her hogs, selling her house for funds if necessary.

CYBER COURT: Cal State Northridge students should find the lecture topic intriguing enough--”Technology in the Courtroom.” To be presented on campus Wednesday, the lecture will focus on how computer technology has influenced the O.J. Simpson murder trial. . . . The even more intriguing guest lecturer: Robert Shapiro, O.J.’s dapper defense attorney.
