BUILDING DEDICATION: Aish Hatorah Institute, an independent Orthodox school and counseling center ravaged by a firebombing on the eve of the Persian Gulf War, will dedicate its new building on the same site in North Hollywood at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Rabbi Zvi Block, who heads the institute, said the two-hour community rally will also honor firefighters who extinguished the fire at one of the institute’s buildings at 12422 Chandler Blvd. before dawn on Jan. 11, 1991.

Block has had close ties to the militant Jewish Defense League, but police said at the time that the incident, in which two firebombs where thrown at the building, had not been preceded by threats.

Aish Hatorah, which is independent of the Los Angeles and Jerusalem organizations of the same name, has been known during its 18-year existence for adult classes, spiritual guidance and counseling for Jews and non-Jews.

The new, 6,700-square-foot building, when fully completed, will house a new sanctuary, classrooms and a dining facility, a spokesman said. Completion is expected in December.
