Huntington Beach players paid tribute to a injured friend Friday by wearing a piece of white tape on their helmets with “32” written in black ink.

The number belongs to sophomore Edwin Ignacio, who is in critical condition in Hoag Hospital after having surgery for a blood clot in his brain Thursday. He left the junior varsity game because of dizziness and was taken to the hospital.

But the biggest honor paid to Ignacio came when sophomore Brent Chancellor kicked a 22-yard field goal with 2 minutes 4 seconds to give Huntington Beach a 23-21 victory over Pacifica at Bolsa Grande High School.

Huntington Beach (1-1) sealed the victory by blocking a 41-yard field-goal attempt as time ran out.

“It’s been a terrible two days,” Huntington Beach George Pascoe said. “The kids did a great, great job coming back tonight.”

Pacifica (1-1) opened a 21-6 lead at the half but Huntington Beach rallied thanks to several clutch plays and despite having a 93-yard touchdown run called back because of an illegal motion penalty.

The first big play came on a fourth down when quarterback David Yadrick completed a 29-yard scoring pass to David Van Hoorebeke with 5:40 to go in the third quarter. After the two-point conversion, the Oilers trailed, 21-14.

Jason Locklin scored on a two-yard run with 1:10 left to cut the lead to 21-20. Huntington Beach missed a chance to tie when Chancellor missed an extra point for the second time in the game.

The Oilers’ winning drive started at their 30 with 5:13 left. Locklin, who had 133 yards in 20 carries, had had runs for 19, 15 and 14 yards in the final drive.

After a dropped pass on third and goal at the four, Huntington Beach sent in Chancellor for the winning kick.

“After we got the ball back I told an assistant to go find [Chancellor] and get him ready because he would have a chance to win it,” Pascoe said.

Pacifica called a time out in an attempt to rattle Chancellor, but his kick was through the middle of the posts.

“I was very nervous,” Chancellor said. “On the kick my mind just went blank. I wanted to kick it for my friend and the whole team.”
