ARE YOU NORMAL? by Bernice Kanner (St. Martin’s Press: $6.99; 122 pp., paperback original). Bernice Kanner spent two years asking Americans questions and compiling the results. If her samples are valid, 45.5% Americans allow their pets in the room when they have sex, 37% don’t know how to work their VCRs, 39% snoop in friends’ medicine chests, and 40% read in the bathroom. The reader is left to decide which aspect of this book is most dismaying--that someone would spend two years asking such inane questions, that people would answer those questions or that anyone would want to compare himself to the responses.
