Mark Butterfield threw for 335 yards and had three touchdown passes, including an eight-yard scoring pass to Greg Comella with 5:21 left, as Stanford tied Wisconsin, 24-24, Saturday at Stanford.

Butterfield, who completed 30 of 42 passes, led the Cardinal (2-0-1) from their one-yard line into Wisconsin territory in the final two minutes, but time ran out as a desperation pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

Carl McCullough, making his second collegiate start, ran for 204 yards on 34 carries and scored once for Wisconsin (0-1-1). Darrell Bevell passed for 172 yards and two scores for the Badgers, but threw an interception that set up Stanford’s tying touchdown.

Butterfield also had scoring tosses of one yard to Comella and 13 yards to Anthony Bookman, who led Cardinal rushers with 63 yards in 17 carries.

Bevell, who was 20 of 32, had scoring passes of 12 yards to Cecil Martin and nine yards to Matt Nyquist. McCullough had a one-yard scoring run.

McCullough had 127 yards in the second half as the Badgers opened huge holes in a defensive line riddled by injuries to starters David Carder and Jason White.

The Badgers took a 24-17 lead on Nyquist’s catch, completing an 81-yard drive, but Josh Madsen intercepted a pass that Bevell threw up for grabs with nine minutes left as Stanford again rallied.
