No. 14 Oklahoma was sloppy on offense for the second week in a row, but got two second-half touchdowns from tailback James Allen to beat Southern Methodist, 24-10, Saturday at Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma (2-0) committed 14 penalties, most of those by the offense, one week after being penalized 15 times in a 38-22 victory over San Diego State. SMU (1-2) was held to 185 yards in total offense.

Ricky Williams scored on a one-yard run with 2:14 left and Jason Reeves returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown with 1:25 to play as Texas turned a nail-biter into a 38-27 victory over Pittsburgh (2-1) at Austin, Tex. Texas (2-0) overcame two costly fourth-quarter interceptions by driving the ball 56 yards in eight plays to Williams’ score. . . . Byron Hanspard rushed for two touchdowns and 117 yards as Texas Tech (1-1) whipped Missouri (1-2), 41-14, at Lubbock, Tex. . . . Jamaican Dartez rushed 24 times for 154 yards, including first-half touchdown runs of 32 and 61 yards, as Tulane (2-1) hung on for a 17-15 victory over Rice (1-1) at Houston. . . . Derrick Tate threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Shaston Coleman with 11:12 to play at Waco, Tex., as Mississippi State (2-1) overcame Baylor (1-1), 30-21. . . . Oklahoma State (1-2) won for the first time in 10 games as David Thompson and Andre Richardson each rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown at Stillwater, Okla., in a 35-7 victory over Southwest Missouri State (1-2), a Division I-AA school.

Terrell Willis ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns as Rutgers (1-1) ran over Navy (1-1) for a 27-17 victory at Piscataway, N.J. . . . Penn extended its record Division I-AA winning streak to 22 games with a 20-12 victory over Dartmouth in an Ivy League opener at Philadelphia. . . . Columbia beat Harvard, 28-24, in an Ivy League game at Boston. Columbia is now 2-18 in its last 20 season openers with Harvard. . . . Tim Reed made a game-saving tackle on a completed pass play at the three as time expired as Yale recorded a 42-38 Ivy League victory over Brown at New Haven, Conn. . . . Harry Nakielny threw for 256 yards and three touchdowns and Princeton held off Cornell, 24-22, in an Ivy League game at Princeton, N.J.

Phillip Daniels set the tone on the first play of the game, a 21-yard interception return that put New Mexico State (1-2) in a hole from which it never recovered in a 40-13 loss to No. 23 Georgia (2-1) at Athens, Ga.

Steve Taneyhill threw five touchdown passes, four in the second quarter, and South Carolina (1-2) recorded a 68-21 victory over Louisiana Tech (2-1) at Columbia, S.C. . . . Jerris McPhail raced 70 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the second half and East Carolina (2-1) was on its way to a 30-17 victory over Central Michigan (1-1) at Greenville, N.C. . . . Brad Jackson returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown and recovered a fumble that led to another touchdown as Cincinnati (1-2) shut out Virginia Tech, 16-0, at Blacksburg, Va. Virginia Tech (0-2) trailed, 16-0, at halftime. . . . Memphis (1-2) took advantage of mistakes for a 33-19 victory over Southwestern Louisiana (1-2) at Memphis, Tenn.

Rod Thomas’ interception with 1:25 to play stopped a Utah State drive and preserved a 24-21 victory for Southern Mississippi (2-1) over the Aggies at Logan, Utah. . . . Northern Illinois (1-2, 1-0) recorded an 18-17 victory over San Jose State (0-3, 0-1) in a Big West opener at San Jose. . . . Eastern Michigan (2-1) recorded a nonconference 51-6 victory over Nevada Las Vegas at Ypsilanti, Mich.
