Bystander Wounded in Ice Cream Truck Holdup

A teen-age boy standing near an ice cream truck was wounded in the arm Sunday evening after two men tried to rob the truck and the driver drove off, knocking the gun aside and triggering the stray shot, police said.

The two would-be robbers stuck a gun through the ice cream truck’s window as it rolled through east 105th Street in South-Central Los Angeles about 6 p.m., Los Angeles police spokesman Officer Don Cox said.

Frightened, the ice cream vendor hit the accelerator, punching the truck forward and causing the gun to go off, Cox said. The stray bullet struck a 14-year-old boy in the right arm as he stood nearby, probably waiting to buy a frozen treat, Cox said.

The boy was in good condition Sunday evening at King/Drew Medical Center, Cox said.
