Annual Cleanup Day Planned for Beaches

Where can you find bedsprings, mopeds, an armchair and a plastic eye?

On Ventura County beaches, of course.

These are just some of the objects volunteers picked up along the local shoreline during last year’s statewide Coastal Cleanup Day.

This year’s cleanup day sponsor, the Surfrider Foundation, is looking for volunteers to help with the 1995 cleanup, set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. With more than 35 sites scheduled for cleanup--including Ormond Beach in Oxnard, Surfers Knoll in Ventura and Arroyo Conejo Creek in Newbury Park--local cleanup coordinator Richard Sweet said volunteers can find convenient locations.

And officials from the city of Thousand Oaks hope residents will do their part Saturday morning as part of Pollution Prevention Week.

The city is also seeking volunteers. Those interested should meet from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, in the picnic area next to Borchard Park tennis court at 190 Reino Road in Newbury Park.

The city will concentrate its efforts on the South Fork of the Conejo Creek from Newbury Park High School to the Wendy Drive bridge. For more information, call 449-2472.

For more information on Saturday’s Coastal Cleanup, call Surfrider at 667-2222.
