FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Repairs on Water Well Get Fast OK

Share

To repair a breakdown at a well that is crucial to maintaining an adequate water supply for fire protection, the City Council this week authorized emergency action.

The council this week approved waiving the normal bidding procedures and hired Layne-Western Co. of Chino to make repairs costing nearly $26,000.

Public Works Director Wayne S. Osborne said repairs will begin immediately and be completed in about 2 1/2 weeks.

The well, on Edinger Avenue east of Newhope Street, is the main well for the northeast portion of the city, Osborne said.

He said it is one of seven city wells and produces more than 3.5 million gallons of water a day. The city receives 75% of its water supply from wells.

The well failed about a month ago and was taken out of operation awaiting repairs. Osborne said another well was also recently shut down after having problems.

Osborne said the two wells not working will not affect the city’s supply of drinking water.

The second well also will be repaired, but the city’s normal bidding procedure will be used to award a bid, Osborne said.
