For the first time in 11 years, No. 17 Miami lost to an unranked team when it fell to Virginia Tech, 13-7, Saturday in a Big East game at Blacksburg, Va.

The Hurricanes had beaten 71 consecutive unranked opponents.

Virginia Tech, 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big East, had six tackles behind the line of scrimmage, recorded six sacks for 72 yards in losses and had a blocked punt that led to a field goal in the fourth quarter.

Miami (1-2, 0-1) was held to 51 yards rushing and gave up 300 yards on the ground. Quarterback Ryan Collins was sacked once and knocked out of the game and replacement Ryan Clement was sacked five times.

Miami’s last loss to a unranked team came at the hands of Maryland, 42-40, on Nov. 10, 1984.

“They did exactly what they were expected to do,” Miami Coach Butch Davis said. “They are a pressure-oriented defense that likes to blitz. We knew it was coming. We had the right plays called quite a few times and we just busted the protection.”

Miami was held to 51 yards rushing, its worst output since gaining two yards rushing against Arizona in 1992, and gave up 300 yards on the ground.
