A 38-year-old Los Angeles woman was killed Sunday and her companion seriously injured when an expensive sports car speeding along Laurel Canyon Boulevard skidded out of control and struck both pedestrians, Los Angeles police said.

The woman, whose name was not released, and her companion were walking along Laurel Canyon Boulevard near Berry Drive about 1:40 a.m. when a 1995 Lotus Esprit driving north on the boulevard skidded, jumped the curb, and hit both women, Officer Norman Nagengast said.

The driver of the Lotus, 31-year-old Thomas Cameron of San Dimas, was arrested and booked on suspicion of manslaughter, Nagengast said.

Nagengast said Cameron lost control of his car because he was traveling at a high rate of speed.
