Ducks’ Shtalenkov Saves Tie With Flames

Ron Stern scored a shorthanded goal with 7:53 remaining to lift Calgary to a 3-3 tie with the Mighty Ducks in an NHL exhibition game Tuesday night.

Ducks’ goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov, who made 27 saves, stopped five shots in overtime to preserve the tie.

Calgary dominated play early in the first period and Cory Stillman scored two goals in a 22-second span to give the Flames a 2-0 lead after one period.

The Ducks rallied in the second period behind left wing Paul Kariya, who got an assist on Todd Krygier’s power-play goal at 2:49 of the second period. Kariya beat Calgary goalie Trevor Kidd at 9:30 of the period and Alex Hicks later scored to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead after two periods.The Mighty Ducks were 1 for 11 on the power play and failed to convert on two two-man advantages.

The Ducks play the Dallas Stars at 7:30 tonight at The Pond of Anaheim. It’s their fifth game in six days.
