Inland Steel Co. to Shut Plate Operations, Cut 500 Jobs: The East Chicago, Ind.-based unit of Inland Steel Industries Inc. said it will close the operations at year-end. The company, the nation’s fifth-largest integrated steelmaker, with a work force of 11,000 people, said no charge against earnings will be required since it has already provided for the termination benefits. It also said it will use early retirements and layoffs to reduce the work force. The plate operations are at Inland Steel’s Indiana Harbor Works in northwest Indiana.
