Inland Steel Co. to Shut Plate Operations, Cut 500 Jobs: The East Chicago, Ind.-based unit of Inland Steel Industries Inc. said it will close the operations at year-end. The company, the nation’s fifth-largest integrated steelmaker, with a work force of 11,000 people, said no charge against earnings will be required since it has already provided for the termination benefits.
