ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Calvary Chapel’s Kuhn Rushes Past Laguna Beach

Share

Laguna Beach struck first in its home opener Friday night, but Calvary Chapel responded quickly and held on to win, 14-7, behind the rushing of senior running back David Kuhn.

Kuhn carried 20 times for 174 yards and a touchdown in the nonleague game.

Early in the second quarter, the Artists (1-3) took a 7-0 lead after Liam McDonagh scored on a 19-yard touchdown.

But the Eagles (2-1) quickly retaliated. On the first play of the ensuing possession, Kuhn ran 22 yards to put Calvary Chapel at its 44-yard line. On the next play, Dallas Kruse took a pitch around the right end and weaved 56 yards for the score.

Kruse, who started the first two games at quarterback for the Eagles, was forced to play slot back because of a dislocated thumb.

After the Artists missed a 34-yard field-goal attempt, the Eagles drove 80 yards. Kuhn scored the game-winning touchdown on a 41-yard run with 1 minute 32 seconds left in the half.

“We have a lot of weapons, but [Kuhn] stepped up in this game,” Eagle Coach Joe Walters said.

Dan Murrietta, who replaced Kruse at quarterback, completed eight of 12 passes for 72 yards.
