ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Droughns Leads Anaheim Over Outmanned Cypress

Anaheim football Coach Allen Carter can sympathize with the plight of the Cypress High football team.

The Colonists (1-3) picked up their first victory of the season Friday, knocking off Cypress, 28-0, at Glover Stadium. Cypress (0-4) was missing six starters, suspended as a result of two separate incidents.

Carter was in the same situation three weeks ago, when the Colonists were missing eight players during their 44-0 loss to Fullerton.

“I’m sure it’s been a rough week for them,” Carter said of the Centurions.

It got rougher Friday night, as Anaheim senior Reuben Droughns continued his climb up the county career rushing list. Droughns rushed for 184 yards in three quarters and scored on a 54-yard run and a 31-yard interception return to lead the Colonists.

Droughns passed Myron White (4,164 yards for Santa Ana Valley from 1973-75) to move into eighth place on the county list. He has rushed for 431 yards in three games this year and 4,222 yards in his career.

Shorthanded Cypress played the game without starters Nathan Headley and Rashad Lawrence, who were serving a one-game suspension after being ejected for fighting in last week’s loss to Savanna.

Leading rusher Bobby Brito, along with Mike Duarte, Ryan Dinley and Eddie Garcia have been suspended indefinitely by the school, according to Coach Ted Hovorka.

Without Brito in the backfield, the Centurions were held to 0 net rushing yards through three quarters. Two long pass completions in the second quarter accounted for 110 of Cypress’ 193 yards, but an interception ended one drive and Jose Escorsia missed a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the half, which turned out to be the closest Cypress came to scoring.
