Capistrano Valley Christian 27, St. Margaret’s 16--Capistrano Valley Christian won the unofficial San Juan Capistrano title defeating rival St. Margaret’s in a nonleague game at Dana Hills.

Tempers were flaring early between the two teams, with flags flying almost every other play and one Capistrano Valley Christian player being ejected.

On fourth down, Capistrano Valley Christian (3-1) capitalized on a St. Margaret’s roughing the passer call, giving the Eagles a first down on the Tartan 14-yard line.

Mike Schwartz took the ball in for a touchdown on the next play, barreling over a Tartan defender for a 7-0 lead with 8:41 left in the first quarter.

St. Margaret’s (1-3) followed with an eight-play drive for 65 yards ending in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Mike Heydenrych to Jon Masters. Tim Baker blocked the extra-point attempt for the Eagles.

Bryant Wulfsberger, the county’s leading rusher, carried the ball 24 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown, a five-yard run, came on the Eagles second possession of the game giving them a 13-6 lead.

St. Margaret’s went ahead, 14-13, with 56 seconds left in the half when Heydenrych took the ball in from one yard. The Tartans completed the two-point conversion taking a one-point lead into the locker room.

Capistrano Valley Christian took the lead for good on its first drive of the second half. Quarterback Wayland Williams dove into the end zone from two yards out with six minutes left in the third.

Wulfsberger sealed the victory in the fourth quarter with a nine-yard touchdown with 10:58 remaining.
