BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Padres’ Smith, Expos’ Malone Resign
The San Diego Padres said General Manager Randy Smith would not be back in 1996, but an agitated Smith later revealed that the team still has not accepted his resignation.
“This was not a joint announcement,” Smith said. “My understanding was this would be a very simple issue. I really don’t understand where we are at this point.”

Unable to find “inner peace” in trying to run a club with the lowest payroll in baseball, Kevin Malone resigned as general manager of the Montreal Expos.
“I’m an architect. I’m in the building business, not in the dismantling business,” Malone said one day after the Expos ended the season at 66-78, last in the NL East.
Montreal had the best record in the majors when the strike halted the 1994 season in August. It also had a financial crisis that forced the unloading of four star players before spring training to trim the payroll, which eventually fell to $10.5 million.
