DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Physical and verbal abuse in the home will be discussed in coming weeks at two of the largest synagogues in the San Fernando Valley and at a clergy luncheon.

Dorothy Schatz of the Jewish Family Service’s Family Violence Project will speak during the 7:30 p.m. service Friday at Temple Beth Hillel, a Reform synagogue at 12326 Riverside Drive, Valley Village.

Saying that domestic abuse affects 25% of all households, Schatz will describe what the Family Violence Project offers to battered women, their children and those who inflict abuse, a temple spokesman said. There is no fee. For more information, call (818) 763-9148.

On Oct. 19, Los Angeles Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti is scheduled to join a panel on domestic violence at Valley Beth Shalom, 15739 Ventura Blvd., Encino. Other panelists will include Assemblywoman Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) and Lynn Moriarty, director of the Jewish Family Service’s Family Violence Project.

The panel discussion at the Conservative synagogue will be part of the membership meeting and luncheon of the Valley Beth Shalom Sisterhood. Reservations are required. Call (818) 993-2437 or (818) 705-3636.

At the monthly Clergy Network luncheon Oct. 16, Betty Fisher, executive director of Haven Hills Shelter, will speak on “The Battered Woman: Some Women Will Never Talk to Anyone About Being Abused,” at Woodland Care Center, 7120 Corbin Ave., Reseda. Haven Hills operates a crisis shelter and 24-hour hot line in the San Fernando Valley.

GOSPEL MUSIC: Performers Daryl Coley, Yolad Adams and Mass Choir will be presenting gospel music shows today at theaters inside Six Flags Magic Mountain, said a spokesman for the amusement park.

In addition, the Crenshaw Christian Center Choir of Los Angeles will sing at 11:30 a.m. The other performers will appear in afternoon and evening shows.

CATHOLIC WOMEN: The 48th annual conference of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women Tuesday at the Universal City Hilton Hotel will hear Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of Los Angeles and keynote speaker Sister Barbara Markey, family life director of the Omaha Catholic Diocese.

Markey will speak at 9:30 a.m. and Mahony will preside at a Mass at 11 a.m.
