Dallas Cowboy quarterback Troy Aikman, who was supposed to sit out as many as three games because of a strained right calf muscle, said Friday he’s healed enough to start Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, although his movement will be limited.

“I’m not outrunning anybody, I promise you that,” Aikman said. “I told the guys up front I need a few more ticks on the clock to bail me out. I’ve got to be conscious of that.”

Meanwhile, Coach Barry Switzer apologized to his top defensive linemen for criticizing them after the Cowboys’ 27-23 loss to the Washington Redskins, and promised he will not cite individual players again.

Switzer called his sharp criticism of Charles Haley, Leon Lett and Tony Tolbert after the game a “regrettable mistake.”

Buddy Ryan will remain coach and general manager of the Arizona Cardinals at least until the end of the season, according to team owner Bill Bidwill.

“Let’s not interrupt the season,” Bidwill said. “Let’s not get anyone disturbed. I think this team [8-8 last season and 1-4 this year] deserves the opportunity to play themselves out of the situation.”
