A small fire forced the evacuation Monday of about 1,000 people from the Salt Lake City International Airport and shut down its control tower.

The concourse for American, Northwest, America West, Vanguard and some Continental flights was evacuated for about 90 minutes. Airport Authority Operations Supt. Ron Malin did not know how many flights were delayed.

The fire broke out about 2 p.m. in a storage closet of a third-floor restaurant. Malin said damage was contained to the closet. The cause remains under investigation.
