WILDLIFE AWARD: The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro recently received a $2,500 Mutual of Omaha Wildlife Heritage Grant of Excellence for its Shore Monitor Program, which teaches junior and senior high schoolers in Los Angeles about the scientific methods of monitoring water quality.

The aquarium will use the grant to fund laboratory supplies that will allow students to research the potential impacts of trace metals, bacteria and DDT on seafood, public health and aquatic resources. It also will help marine educators develop sound environmental policies for managing urban waste while preserving coastal ecosystems.

According to Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Director Susanne Miller, this is the first time the aquarium has received the annual Mutual of Omaha award. Miller said the aquarium has been trying to expand its youth programs and the grant money now will allow them to get more kids involved in marine research.
