Trainers’ Bookkeeper Arrested for Embezzling
The former bookkeeper for horse trainers Bill Shoemaker and Craig Lewis turned herself in Wednesday night to Arcadia police after learning she was being sought for allegedly embezzling more than $200,000, police said.
Susan Bradley of Arcadia was arraigned Thursday in Santa Anita Municipal Court on two charges of grand theft for approximately $200,000, said Det. Bob Anderson of the Arcadia Police Dept. She is being held in Los Angeles County jail on $150,000 bail, Anderson said.
A warrant for Bradley’s arrest was issued about a month ago, after Lewis told police Bradley had stolen about $200,000 from him over the last four years. Lewis, most recently known for his horse, Larry The Legend, claims Bradley cashed bogus checks and funneled the money through separate payroll accounts to her own accounts at a local bank. Lewis said Bradley had worked for him for 10 years.
Shoemaker, who hired Bradley about three years ago on a referral, claimed she took $15,000 from him, with the majority of that from a $9,925 check she cashed during her final days of employment.
