Andres Beltran, a 4-year-old South-Central Los Angeles boy who was shot in the head Thursday evening in a drive-by shooting, died Friday at California Hospital Medical Center.

The boy underwent surgery and was in critical condition overnight, hospital spokeswoman Catherine DiFonso said. He died about noon.

“The family wants to let some time pass before they go out and say anything,” DiFonso said. “They are completely distraught and devastated.”

Police said they are questioning two suspects in the drive-by shooting, which they say was gang-related.

Andres was standing 20 feet behind his brother, Mario Figueroa, 16, in the driveway at their home on the 900 block of East 43rd Place when a car slowed in front of them and fired about five shots, police said.

Figueroa received “a non-serious gunshot wound to the leg,” according to police.
