Wong’s lively first collection of short stories traces the journey of the Lau family from China to Hawaii via Macao and Hong Kong. Most of the stories focus on Michael, the only son in the family. His homosexuality heightens the conflict between the expectations of a Westernized teen-ager and his more traditional parents.
