CULTURAL REVOLUTION by Norman Wong (One World/Ballantine: $10, 174 pp.). Wong’s lively first collection of short stories traces the journey of the Lau family from China to Hawaii via Macao and Hong Kong. Most of the stories focus on Michael, the only son in the family. His homosexuality heightens the conflict between the expectations of a Westernized teen-ager and his more traditional parents. But as the family history unfolds during a trip to his father’s ancestral home in southern China, Michael discovers other family members have secrets, some darker and more carefully hidden than his sexual orientation.
