Police Back in Building After 10-Hour Evacuation

After spending almost 10 hours in a makeshift command center, the city’s Police Department moved back into its headquarters building early Saturday morning. About 100 employees had been evacuated from the building the day before because of a power outage.

The lights went out about 3:40 p.m. Friday and smoke began to fill the building. The city’s 911 emergency service system was temporarily affected, forcing authorities to route the calls to the county’s system.

But within an hour, a trailer was set up with cellular phones, computers and folding chairs to maintain service, police said.

“Things got fixed around 1 a.m.,” Sgt. Dan Carr said. “There was a problem with an electrical panel that caused some kind of explosion.”

Carr said the power outage did not cause any major problems but it was a little inconvenient.
