Lasorda Supporters Step Up to Plate

Share

Those Dodger “fans” who blasted Tommy Lasorda [Viewpoint, Oct. 14] are a fine example of what our society has become: If you’re not happy right now, something must be terribly wrong. Having a problem at home? Get a divorce. The mayor does something you don’t like? Start a recall. Don’t win your division by enough games? Fire your manager.

A lot of people fail to realize that the success of a sports franchise, like a marriage or political career, is measured over the long term and cannot be judged by isolated bits of happiness. Just ask Jackie Autry. Until you can show me that changing managers will guarantee success, shut up.

The letters criticizing Tommy Lasorda for not winning his division by a wider margin were ridiculous, ludicrous and insulting. The idea is to win and that’s what the Dodgers did.

I am positive that the managers of the other teams in the division would have gladly changed places with Lasorda.

I don’t understand the big flap over Tommy napping occasionally in the dugout during games. Has anyone ever considered how much further the Dodgers might have gotten if he would have napped more often?

In response to Maureen McVerry’s letter last week in which she states, “As a Giants’ fan, I look forward to another season of Tommy’s dugout snoozes,” I have this to say:

As a Dodger fan, I look forward to another season of the last-place Giants’ entire team snoozing.

It’s a safe bet that if the food and drink concessions at Dodger Stadium had the same mediocre success rate as the team on the field, O’Malley would have made a lot of changes in a big hurry. He certainly wouldn’t wait 20 years.

Jim Murray’s columns are, for the most part, thoroughly topical and enjoyable, but I can’t remember enjoying one more than Sunday’s “He’s Still Big Dodger in Dugout.” Mr. Murray has hit the pasta on the meatball!
