In fact, all American Indians should be indebted to the Cleveland franchise. In 1915, the Cleveland team changed its name from the Naps to the Indians in honor of the first American Indian to play major league baseball. Chief Louis M. Sockalexis compiled a lifetime batting average of .313 during a three-year career with Cleveland (1897 to 1899).
