Services for longtime trainer Jimmy Jordan, who died Thursday in Phoenix at 73, will be held Monday at Holy Angels church in Arcadia.

In poor health since he suffered a stroke seven years ago, Jordan was perhaps best known for training stakes winners Phil D. and Fabulous Notion. He also had Baffle, Switchback and Score Twenty Four.

A jockey before switching to training, Jordan was among the top three trainers at Santa Anita from 1957-61 and is 22nd on the all-time list at Hollywood Park with 246 victories.

Phil D., who won 21 of his 71 starts, helped establish Jordan’s career. He won the 1950 Hollywood Laddie, the 1951 San Felipe and Malibu Stakes, and the 1952 San Antonio Handicap. He was fourth in both the Santa Anita and Kentucky Derbies in 1951.

Before winning the Santa Anita Oaks in 1983, Fabulous Notion won the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes and 1982 Hollywood Starlet.

Jordan is survived by his son, Mike, four grandchildren and a nephew, Tommy Jordan, who works as a jockeys’ valet on the Southern California circuit.
