Woods Wins College All-America Event With a Birdie in Playoff
Two-time U.S. Amateur champion Tiger Woods birdied the first playoff hole Saturday to beat Fredrik Soderstrom in the Savane College All-America Golf Classic.
Woods, a sophomore at Stanford, and Soderstrom, a sophomore at Tulsa, finished the three-day tournament at El Paso Country Club with scores of 2-under-par 211. Soderstrom missed a 2 1/2-foot putt on the final hole of regulation that would have sealed the victory.
“I guess I must have pulled the ball just a bit,” Soderstrom said.
Woods, of Cypress, led Soderstrom and Virginia’s Lance Combrink by a stroke entering Saturday’s final round. Combrink finished in four-way tie for third at 213 with Garrett Willis of East Tennessee State, Rory Sabbatini of Arizona and Todd Pence of Brigham Young.
