Brush Fire Threatens Homes in Fontana

Share

A fast-moving brush fire erupted Sunday night in Fontana east of Interstate 15 and, driven by gusting winds, threatened homes in suburban subdivisions, authorities said.

Residents in hundreds of homes were told to prepare for evacuations hours after a vehicle fire about 8 p.m. apparently threw off sparks that began the blaze along Sierra Avenue north of Walnut Avenue, authorities said.

After three hours, the fire had burned nearly 800 acres of brush and tall grass. Stiff winds--with gusts topping 30 m.p.h.--were pushing it south, firefighters said. About 40 engines were sent to the fire lines, fire officials added.
