Board Speeds Search for New College Chief

The president of the Ventura County Community College District board plans to call a special meeting as early as next week to speed up the selection and hiring of a new chancellor.

Timothy D. Hirschberg said Monday that the district needs to move forward with its selection process if a new leader is to be on the job by Jan. 1, 1996.

“We have to hear from the site-visit committee that met last week,” Hirschberg said.

The three-campus district has been without a permanent chancellor since last November, when Thomas G. Lakin died suddenly.

After choosing three finalists from a field of more than 50 applicants, selection committee members last Friday visited Golden West College in Huntington Beach, where candidate Philip Westin has served as chancellor since 1993.

Two other finalists, both of whom are based out of state, were told last week that Ventura County Community College District officials would not be paying visits to their campuses.

At the special board meeting next week, trustees will either authorize staff to make Westin an offer or order the committee to visit the campuses run by the other two finalists.

“I want to get going on this,” Hirschberg said. “Let’s make an offer or do some more site visits.”
