Commuter Train

Amtrak’s morning San Diegan commuter service effectively ends this Friday. The end of an era, it marks a major milestone in the campaign by Metrolink officials to force Amtrak out of the commuter rail business.

For decades, Amtrak trains Nos. 71 and 73 have carried Orange County and San Diego commuters north in comfortable seats, with a full-service cafe car, and a relaxing, pleasant social atmosphere. Hundreds remained loyal even after the cheaper Metrolink began service.

Those of us in Orange County will swallow hard and board the sterile, crowded, stiff, uncomfortable and utterly soulless Metrostink with the rest of the Stepfords. San Diego riders can do the same if they drive to Oceanside. For the time being, some of us can still take Amtrak home in the evenings. The irony is that we thought Metrolink would increase our rail transit options. What a bummer.
