PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : SEA VIEW LEAGUE : Newport Harbor Edges Corona del Mar, 7-3
Chris Morrell scored on a one-yard run with just more than a minute remaining to give Newport Harbor a 7-3 Sea View League victory over Corona del Mar Friday night at Newport Harbor High.
The Sailors (3-5, 1-2) stopped a five-game losing streak.
The winning drive began at the Sea Kings’ 33-yard line after an 11-yard punt return by Jeremy Mason. Following a 10-yard holding penalty against Newport Harbor, Josiah Fredriksen completed a 12-yard pass to Danny Pulido for a first down at the 18.
On third and five, Fredriksen connected with Greg Werteman to the one, and Morrell followed with the winning score off right tackle.
Corona del Mar (5-3, 2-1) got to Newport Harbor’s 43 with four seconds left, but quarterback Josh Walz was stopped on a scramble at the 21.
Newport Harbor missed a 42-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half and both teams fumbled away first-half scoring opportunities inside their 20.
