COLLEGE FOOTBALL : SOUTHLAND ROUNDUP : Matadors End Losing Streak
Cal State Northridge broke a five-game losing streak by defeating Southern Utah, 34-28, Saturday night in an American West Conference game before 2,978 at North Campus Stadium.
With 1:02 left, cornerback Doug Varner deflected Rick Robins’ fourth-down pass at the Northridge 15 to secure the victory after the Matadors, 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the American West Conference, almost extended their losing streak by nearly blowing a 31-point third-quarter lead.
Southern Utah is now 2-7, 0-2.

James Regan kicked three field goals for Pomona-Pitzer (4-3, 2-2) in a 9-0 victory over Cal Lutheran (3-3, 3-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Assn. game at Pomona. Sagehen running back Tommy Lowery carried 35 times for 140 yards. . . . Darryl Nolan caught six passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns to lead Azusa Pacific (4-3-1) to a 41-21 victory over Menlo (0-8) at Azusa.
