Cal State Northridge broke a five-game losing streak by defeating Southern Utah, 34-28, Saturday night in an American West Conference game before 2,978 at North Campus Stadium.
With 1:02 left, cornerback Doug Varner deflected Rick Robins' fourth-down pass at the Northridge 15 to secure the victory after the Matadors, 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the American West Conference, almost extended their losing streak by nearly blowing a 31-point third-quarter lead.
Southern Utah is now 2-7, 0-2.
