PREP WATER POLO ROUNDUP : Servite Beats Tustin, Wins Third Straight League Title

Servite won its third consecutive league title by beating Tustin, 13-8, in a Golden West League water polo game Wednesday at Tustin.

Servite (18-7, 5-0), ranked seventh in the county and second in the Southern Section Division II, last won three titles in a row in 1982 when it was in the Angelus League.

Chris Hamme had five goals and Jerry Smith had four for the Friars, who drew 10 ejections in the game. Tustin, ranked sixth in Division II, finished second with a 4-1 league record.

In another Golden West League game:

Saddleback 17, Santa Ana 3--Johnny Roy and Efrain Gonzalez combined for 11 goals in Saddleback’s romp over winless Santa Ana. Roy finished with six goals and Gonzalez five for the third-place Roadrunners (15-8, 3-2).

Jose Zuniga scored all three goals for Santa Ana (0-5 in league).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 16, Loara 1--Kendall Benson scored seven goals to lead El Dorado (19-8, 5-0) to its second consecutive Empire League title.

Katella 15, Cypress 9--Phil Wirthgen scored four goals as Katella (18-6, 4-1) won and finished second in league. Cypress finished third.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 11, Sunny Hills 7--Matt Jewett and Cameron Thrash scored three goals each for league champion La Habra (15-11, 5-0).

Troy 11, Buena Park 7--Jim Kennedy scored six goals to lead Troy (13-10, 2-3). Troy moved into a five-way tie for second place with Sunny Hills, Fullerton, Sonora and Buena Park. A five-way playoff, which starts at 3 p.m. today at Buena Park High, will determine which teams advance to the Southern Section playoffs.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 18, Valencia 5--Sophomore Matt Flesher scored eight goals and Brent Reimer added six for Brea Olinda (18-7, 7-0), which clinched its third consecutive league title.

Reimer has 108 goals this season and shares the school record with Tad Murphy, who set the record in 1994. Reimer, a junior, has one more league game on Friday.

Western 11, Savanna 5--Chris Geeslin scored seven goals to lead Western (15-7, 4-3). Justin Logan had four for Savanna, which clinched third and a playoff spot.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 14, Woodbridge 2--Keith Capielo scored four goals as El Toro (20-5, 5-0) captured its first Sea View League title.

El Toro Coach Don Stoll has won 299 games.

In the Sunset League:

Marina 17, Edison 1--Ninth-ranked Marina (20-6, 5-0) won its first league title since 1989. Keith Haefner had five goals and Stever O’Rourke three for the Vikings.
