CAR COUNT: If your commute seems a little lighter these days, it’s not your imagination. Caltrans says traffic volume drops slightly in the fall, after summer tourists have left and the kids have returned to school. . . . On the Ventura Freeway, where lettuce spilled Friday (A1, B4), daily east and west traffic at White Oak Avenue took a skid from 304,133 cars in July to 296,673 last month.

At its new home page on the World Wide Web, visitors can access “information on the lawlessness of Los Angeles” and “the impact of immigration on California,” a blurb advises. REMEMBERING: The U.S. government took away their homes, their businesses and their freedom. Yet 1,500 young Japanese Americans held in detention camps joined the Army during World War II determined to prove their loyalty to America. . . . At the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Center on Friday (B1), four of them discussed their service. They and others will be honored during a national salute next week.

MOVING EXPERIENCE: The acquisition, restoration and construction unit of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has moved from Malibu to Franklin Canyon, near Mulholland Drive and Coldwater Canyon Boulevard.
