COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Foxon, Tardif Gain Quarterfinals

UC Irvine’s Julian Foxon and Marc Tardif advanced to the doubles quarterfinals in the Southern California Men’s Tennis Regional at UC Irvine by defeating Tim Truebenbach and Peter Webb, of UC San Diego, 6-3, 6-3.

Foxon was eliminated from the round of 16 singles competition by Arizona’s Henrik Wagner, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Two other Anteater doubles teams were eliminated.

Lars Mohn and Danny Vu lost to Manuel Ramirez and Reid Slattery, of USC, 6-4, 6-4. Robin Walker and Thomas Bohan lost to UC Santa Barbara’s Alex Decret and Simon Shen, 7-5, 6-1.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, UC Irvine 0--Brita Schwerm had 19 kills to lead 12th-ranked Long Beach State (16-5, 11-3).

Newport Harbor High standout Misty May had 16 kills and nine digs for the 49ers.

Popi Edwards had 19 kills for UC Irvine (4-18, 1-13).

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

UC San Diego 3, Chapman 1--Christine Chi had 14 kills in the 4-15, 15-5, 15-12, 15-13 victory for San Diego (14-14). Shawna Parkinson and Addy Bernard each had 15 for Chapman (13-12).
