OXNARD — Coach Rick Scott called it the “Buena Ghost” that helped seal the Bulldogs’ 28-20 victory over Hueneme High in the final minute of a Channel League game Friday night at Hueneme.
With 1 minute 54 seconds left to play and Hueneme facing a fourth down, George Jones underthrew a wide-open Jeff Sanchez at the four-yard line, ending a potential game-tying drive.
“We had the Buena Ghost in the end zone on coverage,” Scott said, laughing. “That saved us.”
Josh Cross led the Bulldogs (4-4-1, 3-3 in league play) with 172 yards in 31 carries and scored all four touchdowns.
Ronney Jenkins led Hueneme (4-5, 2-4) with 129 yards and a touchdown in 25 carries. He also scored on a 79-yard kickoff return.
