Robin Beauregard scored seven goals, including the winner in a third sudden-death overtime, to give Marina the title at the first Southern California girls’ water polo championships Saturday night at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Marina defeated Long Beach Wilson, 8-7, in a thrilling finale to the weekend tournament.

Beauregard scored the tie-breaking goal 70 seconds into the third three-minute overtime period on a pass from Jenny Lamb.

“I was just praying it would go in,” Beauregard said. “I didn’t want to have to swim back down again.”

Beauregard scored Marina’s last six goals and twice brought the Vikings (14-3) back from two-goal deficits in the fourth quarter.

Trailing, 7-5, with 1 minute 2 seconds remaining in regulation, Beauregard scored on a penalty shot to cut Wilson’s lead to one. She then stole the ball with 41 seconds remaining and scored from point-blank range to tie the score, 7-7, with 19 seconds remaining.

“My determination kicked in,” Beauregard said. “The adrenaline started flowing and I knew I couldn’t be tired anymore.”

The teams traded scoring chances through two sudden-death overtime periods, each hitting the crossbar with shots. Wilson’s best opportunity was thwarted by Lamb and Marina goalkeeper Candice Chick late in the second quarter. Lamb made a clean block from behind as Wilson’s Robin Jones, who scored twice, raised the ball over her head to shoot from two meters. Chick pounced on the loose ball.

In the third-place game, Los Alamitos defeated Irvine, 10-1.
