Vikings Beat Packers in a Wild One, 27-24 : NFC: Brady’s interception sets up winning field goal. Favre, White go out with injuries.

Jeff Brady, a journeyman linebacker getting his first start of the season, repeatedly made big plays for the Minnesota Vikings in a wild 27-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Brady’s interception with 50 seconds to play set up Fuad Reveiz’s 39-yard field goal as time expired in a game in which five key Packers were injured, including quarterback Brett Favre (sprained ankle), defensive end Sean Jones (sprained knee), wide receiver Anthony Morgan (sprained ankle) and defensive end Reggie White (sprained knee).

Also, Minnesota’s Warren Moon reached 40,000 career passing yards faster than any quarterback in NFL history except Dan Marino. Moon was playing his 164th NFL game after six CFL seasons; Marino reached 40,000 in 153 games.

But Brady was the man of the hour.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Brady, playing for his sixth team in five seasons.

Brady, who played for the Rams briefly in 1993, was playing because Jack Del Rio was out because of a knee injury. He had a hand in two big turnovers in the final five minutes and also forced a first-quarter fumble that led to a field goal.

The Vikings (4-5) snapped a three-game losing streak as Moon had three touchdown passes, completing 21 of 39 passes for 237 yards. He surpassed 40,000 yards on a 28-yard pass to Qadry Ismail in the fourth quarter.

“It’s quite an honor, and it feels good to have it come in a victory, especially against the Packers in an emotional game,” said Moon, who also threw for more than 21,000 yards in six CFL seasons.

After Brady intercepted a pass that bounced off a receiver with 50 seconds left, Moon had completions of 23 and 22 yards to Jake Reed before Reveiz’s winning kick.

The pass Brady intercepted was thrown into a crowd by T.J. Rubley, another former Ram who is now the Packers’ No. 3 quarterback. He was playing because Favre and backup Ty Detmer were injured in the game.

Green Bay (5-4) had six turnovers.

Favre was the first to go out, leaving late in the second quarter and trying to return in the third.

But Favre threw two interceptions, one leading to a Minnesota touchdown, before leaving for good with the Vikings ahead, 24-16. Detmer came on and led the Packers to the tying points, his first career touchdown pass and a two-point conversion pass, both to Mark Chmura.

Detmer got another chance when Reveiz missed a 47-yard field-goal attempt--after a penalty wiped out his successful 42-yarder--with 7:37 remaining.

But under pressure from Brady, Detmer made a poor decision, throwing right to the Vikings’ Roy Barker with 4:56 to play. Detmer, knocked to the turf after throwing the ball, tore ligaments in his throwing thumb on the play and could be lost for the year.

The Packers turned to Rubley, who lost a fumble on his first snap. On the next possession, on third and one from the Minnesota 38, Brady’s interception set up the Vikings’ winning drive.
